What You'll Learn
Ofsted's 'Ready or not' research found that many young people leaving care felt unprepared and unsure where to turn — from not knowing how to manage money or cook, to not meeting their personal adviser until it was too late. Alongside this, the new Local Offer for Care Leavers guidance, effective from 30th September 2026, sets out what local authorities must publish and provide to care-experienced young people as they move into adulthood.
Marie will take you through Ofsted's findings and the Local Care Leaver Offer clearly and practically, covering:
- What the Local Offer for Care Leavers must include, and how it reflects the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026
- Personal advisers: when young people should meet theirs, and what to do if one hasn't been allocated
- Why many care leavers felt rushed or unready to leave care, and how to help them feel prepared and in control of the decision
- Essential life skills — budgeting, bills, cooking and shopping — and how to build these into everyday practice before young people leave
- Financial literacy support local authorities must now provide, including bank accounts, credit, and benefits
- Why ongoing relationships with children's home staff matter to care leavers, and how to keep that door open after they leave
- The new extended NHS health offer for care leavers up to age 25
